  • Background tasks – the numbers don’t add up

I was just looking up from some furious editing and noticed that the “Background Tasks” was going like the clappers – all good. In fact, 73% good – which at this time of the morning and with this client, is excellent.
Then I clicked on the said task’s thingie and found that the only process that was going on was something called “Media Management”. (I was or am in the process of duplicating my project to a backup)

    Here’s the situation:

    Background tasks says 73%
open Background tasks and the Media Management- Consolidating Project, process reads 19%
    No other process is ongoing.

It’s a little like Windows and their “Time to complete copying/ transferring” dialogue boxes – it doesn’t add up to this peon.

Is there a video tip on how to reconnect media, btw? Otherwise I have a long, long day ahead of me.

Unfortunately FCP X doesn’t really give you time feedback in regards to media management. I put in a request to Apple, I would recommend you do the same.

As far as reconnecting media, to put it nicely FCP X has a slightly different approach. Can you tell more about your project and what you are doing and perhaps we can offer a solution.

    Tim,

Thanks for the offer of help and now I get chance to spew out my proverbial gordian knot. (I believe I’m ‘up the Khyber without a paddle at the moment)

I had finished one section of a job and then moved (fateful word?) the events and project folders to their own Final Cut Events Archive and Final Cut Projects Archive, respectively. This was ‘done’ on good advice and I’m pleased to say it worked – one way.
When I came back to ‘restore’ the media, that’s when all hell broke loose. I have the wonderful red with exclamation mark in it and nothing I seem to do cures the ill. I’ve tried reimporting the proress422HQ raw footage – to no avail. I’ve copied the project back into its respective Final Cut folders and nada. I’ve drag’n’dropped the raw stuff to every folder mankind has known or pondered to no avail. I’ve ‘re’ imported the media and ….nothing and now I’m looking at a long long weekend through my own, admitted, stupidity.

Should I have duplicated the project to a backup drive? I believe so and that’s what I’ve been doing since. But I’m not sure they will work ‘nicely’ when or if I need the media again – why DO clients keep changing their minds????

if specs are of interest: MacPro w/ 10.7.2
    Memory: 17Gig
    Drive: 3x 2TB +1 SSD
    FCPX + Compressor 4
    Beverage: Earl Grey tea
    Dress sense: debatable (apparently)
    Operator: feeling-like-a- tosser-at-the-moment mood

To my fellow Earl Grey drinker,

Actually I think you did everything correctly. I have folders called “Final Cut Events Disabled”, etc and it works very well. You’ll want to always quick FCP X when moving around projects and events as I am sure you well know.

FCP X keeps track of files by giving files a big old long ID number like this: uid=”FE7553EE-6E2D-42A6-ABA9-989B7C766545″. That magical number prevents FCP X from referencing the wrong clip. So I suspect there is something else going on.

Why don’t you check a few things:

    – Make sure you are not playing proxy clips. Hit Command-, to view preferences under Playback.
    – Check that your project is referencing the correct Event. Select the project in the project browser, and in the inspector and looked under “referenced events”
    – Check the reference for a clip itself. Select a clip and in the inspector choose “Show FIle Status” from the gear icon:

If you hover over the file location a full path will come up after a second or two:
