As I start to handle alot more video, and realize the potentially significant investment there can be in the shooting, I have been thinking about improving my backup procedures, and was wondering what others are doing.

At present my work flow is to upload my .mts files using device explorer and then saving to my C: drive. I then drag the files to an external HD, and then do it again to another external Hd, so I end up with two matched external HD drives. Is there a better way that doesn’t involve further financial investment, or perhaps only a modest further investment. Or, is my procedure even the proper way to go about doing this?

    Thanks in Advance!

    Gary,

I leave my original footage, project files and final output on an internal raid(0). When each episode is done, I copy all of that to an external raid(5). I copy the finished product to a server. At the end of the season I delete them from my internal and move on. Who knows what will happen when my external is full!

You can have a 9TB raid(5) for about $900. That’s about the price of an inexpensive camera or some lighting gear. Don’t short yourself when it comes to storage, you may want those old files someday.

    Just my 2-cents,

    Jeff
