Back Up drives and FCPX
Right, because one cannot hide or ignore partition drives or extra drives without dismounting them (not going to happen) I have ten drives in my event library and my Project Library. Annoying but not the end of the world (quite!).
What is bothersome, and may be an issue, thus my asking, is that the drive I keep my projects and rushes on is an extra internal 2TB drive. I back this up to another extra internal 2 TB drive. I use Event Manager X to switch off the back up drive but each day when it does the back up for some reason Event Manager X is overridden (perhaps because it is a new version of the back up) and FCPX obsessively re-acknowledges the BU drive, and upon loading tells me that 2 versions of the same projects have been found and one is going to be ignored.
Yes, this is annoying (PLEASE LET HIDE REDUNDANT DRIVES AND PARTITIONS FOR THE LOVE OF GAIA!) but it isn’t a deal breaker, unless anyone can see this becoming an issue in the future. Which is my question. Is this just another annoyance or is it a potential problem?
And sure, I should get into the habit of opening Event Manager X before booting up FCPX and checking the boxes, but a) good luck with getting me to remember to do that each day and b) really I shouldn’t. Apple should have accepted that if they want to sell this to people who will use it for a living those people will, more often than not, have lots of partitions and drives and back up drives etc etc., and have coded in an ability to switch off or hide all the redundant drives.

I have two internal drives in my MBP. If I don’t want the 2nd drive to be on the Desktop, I just right-click on it and “eject it”. This seems to work fine for me. Yes, it is a thing that you would need to remember to do before you launch FCP X, but like all the other silly workarounds and hoops we must jump through to make it through the day, you get use to it.
I do agree that it would be nice to be able to eject a drive once inside FCP X.

I’m really not up for ejecting drives and reinstalling them. Obviously I’ll live with the clutter, but more so was curious if my BU drive also having the projects on them at the same time is going to be an issue as FCPX says it won’t load one. I think it ignores the BU version but was just curious if others new.
And yep, hiding all redundant drives permanently is one of those things I’m kind of surprised isn’t in place 18 months down the line. but hey 🙂

If Events and Projects are in the correct locations for FCP X, it will see them. I never got around to buying Event Manager, so I still just manually move stuff around before I boot FCP X. As I said, I’m use to doing this before opening FCP X, so I don’t give it a second thought.My boot drive/Movies folder has Events and Projects, but I hide them from FCP X by sticking them in folders called:
“Final Cut Events NOT-USING”
“Final Cut Projects NOT-USING”
Most of the time the main Events and Projects folder on my boot drive are empty.Dave

Not an answer but maybe an easier workaround: disk utility mounts and un-mounts drives much easier than the finder. Much more responsive, no need to disconnect and reconnect a drive to get them recognized for example. You can add disc utility to the load at start up preferences and have it when needed. I assume event manager was doing the trick for you until lately but disk utility works great.

Check out a beta (works reliable with missing features) of my diskHandler. It uses the same Unix code as DiskUtility but has batch functionality. More features will follow.

It’s not quite working for me yet. I uploaded a screenshot, hopefully it shows up okay. Once I click okay on the error window, the program opens, but no drives show up. This may well be because I have 3 partitions on my main boot drive and also I have a new drive I just installed a couple of days ago when I removed the Optical Drive, but it’s not currently mounted.Dave
