Avid XpressPro crashing and buggy – any ideas welcome
I’m running 4.8.1 on a fully loaded G5. Inherited the project from someone else. Media is on a 500 GB Lacie Firewire – 24P 14:1 OMFI.
This is a ‘cuts and dissolves’ project, so I’m not pushing it at all. Every half hour or so, while doing nothing more than scrubbing through stuff,the system gets hung (the colorful swirling ball of death) and I have to force quit. The other thing that happens is that once or twice a day, clips start playing back with imbedded break up. By that I mean they appear to be permanently corrupt so that you can actually jog and park on what appears to be a distorted frame (not a transient or intermittent issue). I have to then quit and trash Avid settings MC state, etc along with the media data bases in the OMFI folder. All is well after that….until…a couple of hours later.
Long one, I know. Anyone have ideas on this. Could it be that the avid can’t handle 14:1 FW editing? I know that FCP is fine with DV over FW but thats it.

I don’t know about the G5, but in windows, there’s a read me file that tells you how to optimize your computer’s settings. It’s like Night and Day. I would check and make sure there’s nothing like that. Also, look for any wacky software conflicts, ie., 4.8 not working with your version of the OS, having some upgraded version of Safari or iTunes that make Avid buggy.
It’s always something weird like that.

Your profile doesn’t say wether you are using Mojo. If you are, the Lacie drive sticks out. There’s been a lot of discussion regarding firewire drives – as in ‘it makes the system buggy’. Mojo wants all your FW resources, and pouts when it doesn’t have exclusive use. Unless your FW card is on a totally seperate bus, I’d look at that as well.

Thanks very much. The suggestions above have been helpful to some degree. No, I am not using Mojo – just lacie drives. Turning off file sharing and such has solved the crash-o-matic syndrome but the media data bases continue to self-corrupt, causing flashes in source and record monitors, which get preogressively worse until I throw out the data bases and avid settings and restart the system. I’m still doing this 3 or 4 times a day.
By the way, is there no way to turn on digital out to monitor on an NTSC w/o the mojo (on a non-dv project)?

no, I don’t have MOJO and I just posted a new explanation of what’s happening… I’ve worked on this around the clock for 10 days.
