AVID XPRESS PRO 4.6 ON HP XW8000 FOR AVID DS ..WILL IT WORK?
Posted by Harcharan Singh on April 21, 2005 at 3:55 pmHi,
I just purchased an HP XW8000 which has been made specifically for Avid DS system.I purchased it to run Avid Xpress PRO 4.6.It has ATI File GLX1 video card. When I am capturing thru firewire video is okay but if I add any video effect or a transition that portion of rendered file shows very poor and blocky video. Can it be due to the HP workstation model ?Pl help.I even loaded Premiere on the same machine with same results.I am capturing the media on Maxtor 80GB HDD.
Thanks

April 21, 2005 at 7:37 pmNo, it’s probably the video card. Read the Avid specs!! They give you only a few specific NVIDIA (NOT ATI or MATROX!!) cards that are certified for use with XPro, namely the Quadro 280 NVS (pretty weak, don’t waste your time), QuadroFX 500 (what I have, great card, inexpensive), Quadro4 980 XGL, QuadroFX 1100, and QuadroFX 1300. Just about any mid-range Nvidia Ge-Force card or other Quadro-series card will work. Also make sure and read the XPro 4.6 readme for specific Nvidia driver information.
Ditch the ATI, they’re not meant for use in Avid (or numerous other NLE/graphics programs), despite what ATI says!!
Make sure you have either an ADS Pyro or SIIG 1394 firewire capture card. Also, make sure your video display settings are set to the best (there’s a little button on the bottom left of the timeline, oval-shaped. It will either be yellow, half-yellow/half-green, or green. Green means it’s at the highest display settings.)
Do you have enough RAM? Min. 1 GB for software-only, 1.5 GB with Mojo.
Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2? It’s not absolutely necessary with 4.6, but you should have it nonetheless. If you upgrade to XPro HD 5.x, you MUST have SP2.
One last thing: what kind of media are you capturing? Are you trying to capture uncompressed via Mojo? If you are, you’ll need faster hard-drives, either SATA or SCSI. If you’re just capturing standard DV25 media over firewire, you should be okay with your Maxtor IDE drive.

April 22, 2005 at 10:25 amHi,
Thanks for ur reply. The icon for display is green ie highest quality.
HP XW800 comes with a certified firewire card. The display on the desktop is also bad after rendering any video filter.During normal playback without any filter the video is fine on PAL monitor but on desktop it plays with coloured dots .
Should I change my graphic card to a certified avid card for PRO.
Thks

April 22, 2005 at 10:59 amMost definitely. Get a Nvidia card (certified or not). I’d also try reinstalling XPro first, to see if that fixes your problem or not.

April 23, 2005 at 1:52 amthis is such an amusing question. The original post gives us the impression that this gentlemen bought the “same computer used for the AVID DS”, as if the computer has anything to do with the video image processing. AVID is currently using the NVidia 1100 card, and was previously using the 980 card, but with ANY CARD, it’s not going to give you the image quality as if you had a $90,000 DS or Nitris, that does not process DV25 via firewire . Buying a Chevy Monte Carlo does not give you a NASCAR race car.

April 23, 2005 at 10:53 pmbut, rechip it, add a blower, and run the bottle with a nine inch rear end with some Mickey Ts and a monte carlo could shag some ass.
wait a minute
