  • Avid Xpress 4.5.6 won’t play in timeline and “extending trim’s heads and tails”

Posted by Mike J. on September 13, 2005 at 5:51 pm

I have Avid XPress 4.5.6 and MAC OS 10.3.9 and 1.5 gig of ram. I don’t use it often using FCP mostly now.

Coming back to Avid today, I can get clips to play in Source Window, but in the sequence, when I hit play, the Green Play light activates for a second then goes out… no playback.

I’m only monitoring on computer to external monitor. What do I have set wrong.

Additionally, in the trim tool… is there a modifier that will allow one to extend and lessen the length of a picture only or audio clip file in the seqence without adding or subtracting from it’s postion in the timeline…just extending or shortening the heads and tails of the clip itself?

    Thanks

    Mike

I think I understand what you’re looking for, and it’s called “slip” trimming. Lasso around the clip you want to slip from right to left (the direction is important) and you should see trim handles on the inside of the head and tail. You can then adjust the shot.

There’s more information (and probably a much better explanation) in the manual or online help if you look for Working In Trim Mode>Slipping or Sliding Segments.

    good luck,
    Carl

Nah, don’t want to SLIP it inside itself…. just want to take a clip that say 1:00 and then drag it’s heads to the left extending by 10 frames without moving the clip in the timeline…so adding heads to it without pushing down the timeline

Ah, well then you just want a regular trim, with the little pink rollers on both sides of the edit.

    good luck,

you can also place an in or out point where you want the clip to extend out to and then hit extend edit. i find it much faster.

Do you have the extend feature in Xpress? I don’t have that button in my command pallete? I have Xpress DV.

xpress dv does not have that command. remember, it’s a stripped down version.
