AVID VideoRAID with FCP?
Hi there FCP people!
I have a bit of an issue on my hands. My boss decided that rather than filling out our XServe (which is only half-populated) he would rather see if we could use one of the AVID VideoRaid’s from our home office with FCP. So we purchased an ATTO UL5D SCSI Controller card, got the drives up, plugged them in and…. nothing sees them. This didn’t really surprise me at all.So I’ve been trying to get this array working; I got to reconfigure the array on a PC for a Mac, reformatted, and still no go. A friend of mine (AVID guy) said I needed the ATTO Express Stripe software (which I don’t have) to stripe the drives before I could use them at all.
So here’s my question: is this even possible? Can this array be used by FCP? I figured hey, it’s just an array of drives, why wouldn’t it work? Just needs to be formatted correctly, right?
Any thoughts? Thanks for any help you guys can give!! I really appreciate it 🙂

Depends on which Avid RAID you have. The more current RAID’s are actually Medéa RAID’s that have been re-branded at Avid.
You would have to have the correct RAID controller for your machine and that array and then you’ll have to configure the RAID based on what the card manufacturer tells you to do. In our case we’ve worked with both ATTO and Areca RAID controllers and in order for the arrays to work correctly, we have to first configure the units per their specs.
Also, you say you’re using SCSI? Apple has not supported SCSI in quite some time and that format is not all that reliable anymore using Macs.
I would contact ATTO Tech Support first and foremost and see if they can help you get it set up. If not, then you’re probably out of luck.

I actually have spoken with ATTO Tech Support; they were the ones who recommended the UL5D for me, as it’s dual channel so it will support the full RAID; yes, it is a SCSI controller, but they said it should be fine for what I needed to do (DVCPro HD editing mainly).
I’ll check with them regarding settings today, but last I dialed into the RAID, there weren’t a whole lot of options for me to choose from, sadly. Thankfully I think these are Medea drives rebranded (Medea is the contact manufacturer on the bottom of the array casing! :)) so I’m glad to hear you’ve had success with them in the past. Medéa was my brand of choice until Avid bought them. Then I made a pretty immediate switch to something else.
I haven’t used SCSI in probably 3 years or so now so I have no idea how successful that will be, but good luck!
