Avid recapturing to full resolution
Hello,
I’m having problems recapturing from 15:1 to 25:1. When I do it the capture is off by a slight margin. The timecode should not be a problem because I redubbed all my tapes and made fresh time code before I started editing. Is there any way to correct this problem? I’ve been told by some people that I may have to fix everything manually. This would be just dreadful as it would be almost akin to editing it all over again. I’m hoping there is some trick to fixing this.

Were they both captured over FireWire or was the 15:1s done over 9 pin control and the DV25 being done via FireWire?

What happens if you recapture using the offline resolution, do you get the same results as the original offline or is it off as well?

Dunno about the TC trouble, but why on earth do you want to recapture from bad to even worse?
If you have so much footage you need this low datarate you must have tons.
It’ll take you a week at least to capture to fill a drive that will cost you 100 bucks.Energy, time and wear of machines are all more pricy than going out, get an extra drive and be done with it.
Personally i would capture everything in DV and never go back to tape.

I haven’t tried recapturing to offline resolution. Should I try? What are the implications for either scenario?
bouke, I’m a little confused as to what you are talking about. I’m recapturing from offline resolution to online resolution.

I think bouke misunderstood what you said (as did I under I read MichaelP’s post). In your original post you said you were capturing from 15:1 to 25:1–read literally it would be capturing from a 15:1 compression to a 25:1 compression–not good! If that’s really what you wanted to do, just transcode your footage. Now, if you were going from 15:1s to DV25 (as MichaelP assumed, and I’m guessing rightly so) then you’re coming back to more of an online resolution. I think that’s where the confusion is about capturing to a lower rez.You said you captured everything via firewire. Did you bring it in in big chunks? Firewire, from what I’ve seen (and experienced once or twice) is notorious for slipping a little off track when you’re bringing in huge clips. I’ve found it’s much safer to bring in smaller chunks of 5, 10, maybe 15 minutes rather than trying to capture a whole tape.
Have you tried subclipping a few of your bigger chunks and just redigitizing those, as a tester? Are they still off? If so, by how much? Is it consistent? If it’s off by a consistent amount changing everything won’t be so bad–a little time consuming, but just slip the shot “x” number of frames, go to the next shot, slip it, etc…
Otherwise, I’m not sure what to tell you other than best of luck–let us know if you figure it out!

Next important question,
when did you restripe TC? After ingesting for the offline?It should not make any difference in TC if you capture offline or online.
However, what can make a difference if you have digitized trough some kind of converter that added a delay to the video.So what exactly did you do? What equipment, how was it connected, is your offset constant, how big etc.
