Due to some unexpected problems on my desktop, I will have to start a new editing on my laptop.

It might not be state of the art, but it does have a dual-core cpu, 2Gb memory capacity and 1394 interface.

What I would like to do for now is capture all the tapes for this job, HDV and DV, and start a basic editing, with no image or audio processing.

Up to what Media Composer version can I install on this machine with no major compromises running with XP SP3?

Later on, with my desktop up and running, I will do my main editing with MC 5.5.2

Very hard to say. I had version 2.8 (if I recall correctly) running on a Dell laptop which wouldn’t be regarded as high spec today, but the issue for running Avid on a laptop isn’t so much the processor power as the display adapter, so it’s always been pretty limited over which laptops it’ll run on.

I can use version 3.0, which if I am not wrong I did install on this laptop some time ago, so I could view things on my plasma in full screen.

It did work fine, as I recall, but the use was very specific, as you see. Didn’t edit anything on it, just USBed the files HDD on the laptop.

So there were no major problems with the display.

The other problem is that the OS partition has only 3Gb available, which the MC will take 2.0 from.

That’s why I asked if, for this temporary use, with no effects or rendering, I couldn’t use latests Xpress version, which I can put anywhere. The captured files will be alright, won’t they, even if HDV? The edit file should be different, but when I go up to MC again I won’t go back.

Everything is forward compatible. So yeah, if you capture DV&HDV, that, the projects, media and even the effects are forward compatible.
