  • Avid Media Composer and Varicam 24p and other frame rates???

Pardon the intrusion. I am a DP not an editor, but I am working with a facility that has an Avid Media Composer with Adrenalin HD version 2.1.5 and they are just beginning their learning curve with HD with some footage from my Varicam. I am hoping the cows in the avid forum are as friendly and helpful as the cows in the Varicaam forum and you will be able to provide some answers, insight and help.

They have a panasonic 1200 a deck and are taking the footage in via fire wire.

Can this system be used for working with 24P?

What settings in the deck and software of Media Composer do we need to be concerned with?

Can other frame rates…12p…48p etc. be edited?

Any insight and advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi,

There is nothing much to worry abt it……When the editor open a new project itself there are formats he can choose….so there he can open it in 24P ….and then the 12p and 48p case…that has to be done in the timeline…there arent any options to open a project in such a frame rate….anyway as a DOP u will be knowing which shot u have shot in such frame rate and once its is recorded in to the Adrenaline u can do a motion effect in the timeline on that particular clip. Yeah further doubts,,welcome….Regards

I can tell you from experience that the DS Nitris system will import and use the flagged frames created when the Varicam is cranked over or under speed. I don’t know if Adrenaline has that capability. If not, your footage will be imported as 59P unless you run it first through Panasonic’s frame rate converter.

You need to be in a 23.976 project
You can only capture over direct FireWire connection (not via the hardware).
VFR support is coming by the end of the year.
