The Dell 690 isn’t on the list, but that doesn’t mean it won’t run it. It just means it’s not been tested so you won’t get support from Avid if you run into problems. You can always download the 30 day trial of 6.5 and test it out to see if you run into any show stopping bugs or issues.

If you system meets the minimum requirements at least and you have a qualified graphics card you will probably be alright. It just won’t be as fast as more modern hardware.

You need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64bit and you want 4GB RAM min (ideally 8GB or more)
A supported graphics card like an FX3700 would be a big help.
But I suspect you’ll be disapointed. The new software is much more demanding of the hardware so you’ll see a big drop in responsiveness and performance.

Thanks Pat – the Dell is clearly too old/underpowered and if I need to buy a new computer I might consider FCP on a mac…

If you go FCP it will have to be FCP-X as FCP7 is now EOL
and you need a top end Mac to get FCP-x to play nice. With that spec Mac you could easily run Media Composer which unlike FCP runs on Mac or PC.
The new HP iMac type machines look really good and at less cost than an iMac…
