  • Avid Free DV: lift and extract buttons disappear from timeline

Posted by Jeanne Power on June 3, 2009 at 6:01 pm

    Hello,

I’m learning Avid Free DV (yes, I have a legitimate copy installed from a disc which came with my Avid Made Easy book by Jaime Fowler) and I’m having an issue with the timeline.

When the program loads, I initially see the timeline as it appears in the book. But then it changes and the “Lift” (weight lifter man) and “Extract” (scissors) buttons are no longer there. According to the book, these features should be present on Free DV as well as Express.

I’ve tried looking through preferences, and tried all of the possible modes (basic, source/record, capture, etc.)and restored them to default settings using the command in the Toolset menu and can’t seem to find a way to return the timeline to its default mode.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Best,
    Jeanne

UPDATE: I figured out the problem and thought I’d post the resolution for other new users.

When the timeline is resized to be smaller than screen-width it starts to hide buttons. By stretching out the timeline to screen-width again, they reappeared.

So simple it’s embarrassing to have asked!

    hi Jeanne,

Not embarrassing at all, as I’ve noticed more people (as myself) had the same problem. I can add that the “Z” button does the lifting as well (and “X” cuts..)

    Thanks..

Can anyone direct me to a copy of Avid Free DV for Mac?

I’m trying to brush up on Avid (I’ve been off it for years using FCP) and can’t afford to buy a copy for practice. I just want to refresh my memory and play around with the interface between jobs. No heavy lifting.

I know there is a free 30 day trial of Media Composer out right now. Unfortunately, my computer does not meet the minimum system requirements–it is not running OS 10.6.3. I do, however, have an older machine, running OS 10.3.9, that could handle Avid Free DV.

Can anyone direct me to an archive of the Avid Free DV software for Mac?

For the record, I have located a copy of Avid Free DV version 1.6.1 for Windows at:

    https://en.kioskea.net/download/download-1992-avid-free-dv

Here is a list of the Avid Free DV system requirements:

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
