Hi guys, Avid newbie here. Just switched over from Premiere and I can’t figure out why Media composer 7 requires a transcode for DnxHD and Prores. I’m doing a drag and drop import into my bin. Do I have some setting wrong?

    Thanks

    Found a solution here https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/45/871678

Looks like that helped but is there any way to speed it up any more?

Well, first off know that Avid isn’t like Premiere. Avid really wants the media you import to be converted to an Avid friendly editing format. Premiere doesn’t, as you know…it works with media natively. So if you are going to use Avid Media Composer, you need to do what it wants.

First off…don’t import by dragging into a bin…that INSTANTLY converts the footage. If you want to access it natively, you use AMA. LINK TO AMA will bring in the media natively…make a clip that points to the media, untranscoded. Now, if you want, you can try to edit that natively. Avid MC can do that…but it is far from optimal. It might be very sluggish.

The best thing to do would be to then highlight all the clips you brought in via AMA and TRANSCODE to DNxHD.

Import via AMA. Tried it and it seems to be working fine natively. Thank you!

Small tip to speed up your workflow — hold down alt/option while dragging the file into a bin. This will AMA link the file instead of the traditional import.

Is this new to 7? I’m still in 6.5 land and it doesn’t work.

    Best
