Depends on Codec – are you going for MPEG2 or H.264?

MPEG2 – easier to encode, to retain picture quality you got with a higher bitrate, less content can fit on a disk. Ballpark 2 hours of total material on a single 25GB disc.

h.264 – harder to encode, you can get better quality at lower bitrates, thus allowing more data on a disk. Ballpark 3.5-4hrs of total material on a 25GB disc.

VC1 – I’m not even sure this is supported by Avid DVD.

You can’t mix codecs on a disc.

Your total (video) bitrate cannot exceed 48Mbits/sec, with 40Mbits of that max for video.

That being said, I rarely see h.264 exceed 20Mbits/s, and MPEG2 rarely above 25mbits/s – you just don’t get much more for the extra bits.
