Avid Audio Workflow – Converting Audio for Edit
(Still transitioning to Avid, and prepping myself for an Avid gig…)
In FCP I normally convert audio to .aiff 48khz for the editor using Compressor or MPEG Streamclip. Files originate as .mp4s, .wavs, .movs, etc.
As an AE, what is are the common procedures for prepping audio for Avid systems and editors? And is it okay to ‘Import’ the audio files?
Also, I noticed when I bring audio into a timeline, I can choose mono or stereo for the audio track – wouldn’t I just choose stereo? Is there a common procedure for massive Avid projects?

Import the audio and it will convert it to the project’s sample rate. Check under your audio settings to see what that sample rate is (I think it defaults to 48kHz).
Can’t say on the Mono/Stereo thing. I always use mono tracks because I always have, but I”m not an AE and I don’t have an AE, so I don’t know the standard workflow there. I’d ask your editor how they want it set up.

I agree – ask your editor how they want that to be defined. Most feature editors I speak with keep it mono – but shorter form editors like them –

That’s good to know re: Import.
But what if there are a bunch of videos, for example, that were ripped offline and need to be converted for their audio? Would another Avid app be used? MPEG Streamclip? Just wondering what would be most efficient.
I only have MC on the system I’m practicing on.

Import does not allow you to choose video, audio, or both, it’s always everything. Couple things to consider:
AMA to the clips, subclip out audio only, then transcode those to Avid media.
Use a program like MPEG Streamclip to extract and transcode audio only as a pre-process to an Avid compatible import format such as WAV, AIF, .mov, etc.

I see. All makes sense. Thanks for the note about AMA and sub-clipping the audio. I guess workflow preference would be the judgement of the editor.
