There are different flavors of AVI, Some dont play well with Vegas.

Like what Steven says there are many different types of avi. The avi format is but a container. The question is what is in the container. If it is divx then it is very unlikely to come into Vegas. The avi must conform to a editing format such as dv and the audio must be compatible with the video format.

Well the avi file is a 7 sec clip and weighs in at 750 mb
It was created with After Effects and FX sound effects were added.

Perhaps i can use any vdeo converter to change it into a more suitabel avi fro vegas?

Ok, if you have Quicktime Pro installed see if you can open it with Quicktime.

the original avi clip graphic is superb when imported into vegas
(750mb lasting 7 secs)..but no sound.
It was produced with After Effects (not by me)
I dont have quicktime pro. I take it that is premium software?

any video comverter gives many formats.
perhaps there is anoither video converter using avi formats that would do the job?

Hi,
No Quicktime is the standard apple media player and by no is it premium softwares. Quicktime Pro can be purchased at the Apple store for around $30.00 US. Quicktime Pro is a media player that can also be used to do very basic editing such as cutting and splicing, inserting or removing audio tracks or recording audio.

The point being, should the file open in Quicktime, it can then be saved as a “hinted Movie” which can be brought into Vegas without further encoding saving both time and disk space. There are limitations though. Apple has deemed to withhold licencing of the 64 bit version of Quicktime for Windows based machines. This results in the limitation where Quicktime can use up to about three Gigs of ram hence diminishing the performance of the softwares.

Anyway back to the problem at hand. If possible return to the author of the file and request an image sequence and a audio file. png or exr files work well in Vegas. The reasons for image sequences are too numerous to explain here but let’s just say it is the prefered method of transferring files by production houses.

Should it be impossible to get a image sequence of the file, installing DaVinci Resolve Lite a premium software that is absolutely free may allow transcoding of the file.

Here we happen across the main issue and that is one of the audio portion of the file. Since Vegas ingests the video portion, all that is needed is to extract the audio track and import it to Vegas. From there simply place it on the timeline.
