i received a CD disk with a bunch of .avi files to use in my project.

But I was not able to open them in FCP. I tried to convert them to .mov files within
FCP using ‘Export” in the File menu, but was not successful. Maybe I was using the wrong
settings, codec. Is there some way to open and be able to edit with an .avi file in FCP??

    thanks

You should try to always convert to .mov’s that match your sequence settings before bringing them into FCP. Even though, if you have the correct codecs installed that match the one that the avi was created with, it can play as is in FCP.

If you can’t watch the .avi’s in QT player, then you don’t have the right codecs installed on your computer.
Find out what program/codec was used to create the files.

Google Flip4Mac. That’s what you want to do. A search on the word “.avi” would have gotten this info as well. Quite a common Q.
