.AVI files don’t show video in media pool or on timeline
I have an old vegas 7.0d (Windows XP) project that I’m trying to work with in vegas 9.0e (Windows 7). I moved all the project files to a new hard drive/location and naturally when I opened the old .veg project it asked me to “specify a new location or replacement file” which I did but this only worked for .mp3 files. It never asked me to find the new location for the .avi files and consequently were labeled as “Media Offline”. The strange thing is that I’ve tried to import these .avi files in a new project and when dragged to the timeline they only show the audio waves and no video- but there is nothing wrong with the .avi files themselves. I can play them with divX and media player. I also checked them for missing video codecs using g-spot but it says they are installed. Default Vegas settings are being used. The only connection I can see is that the .avi files that don’t show video are all from my old computer/harddrive and all other .avi files work fine, but why? How do i make the older .avi files work? Please help. Thank you.

Are you using Vegas Pro 9.0e 64-bit? If so you will need a 64-bit codec for DivX. Otherwise use the 32-bit version of Vegas Pro.
BTW, Vegas doesn’t like DivX or Xvid files and they may not render correctly. I would convert them to MJPEG or some other codec that is easier to edit.

If John’s answer doens not solve the problem, look for a video on youtube from “montagical” (look for the “vegas”, “tutorials”, and “AVI” keywords to find it). It talks about this problem (or at least, one that looks similar). It is about a missing Codec (Morgan MJPEG if I remember correctly).

Thanks so much for your help. I found out what the issue was. I should have mentioned that I am in fact running the 64bit version of vegas 9. The problem was that the .avi files that only imported audio were all captured using camtasia studio’s 32bit “Techsmith Screen Capture Codec” which is not compatible with any 64bit application. I just re-installed my old version of vegas for this particular project
You can have BOTH versions of Vegas Pro 9.0e 32-bit and 64-bit installed an at the same time. In fact, I don’t see how anyone can work without having both since not all FX and codecs are available in 64-bit yet.
The person who made that tutorial was wrong when he told you that you had to uninstall the 64-bit version of Vegas to install the 32-bit version. He was also wrong when he said it was a Vegas problem. It is a Techsmith problem. No 64-bit NLE supports 32-bit codecs and Techsmith needs to update their technology to support 64-bits.
BTW, IMHO the whole reason for using Camtasia is for their superior lossless codec. If you plan to capture with Laragith instead and you plan to edit in Vegas, then there is absolutely no reason to buy Camtasia at all. Just use the free CamStudio at that point.

Thanks for clarifying John. I just ignored the part about uninstalling the 64-bit version of vegas to use the 32bit. I just wanted to use my old version of vegas for my project since that’s what I started it in (even though it works in vegas 9 32bit). If I ever run into this problem in the future I’ll use vegas9 32bit. I don’t think the video ever mentioned it was a vegas problem, but it helped me realize that the techsmith codec was causing the incompatibility issue. I agree about camtasia- I used the 30 day trial to capture- and have since been using CamStudio. Thanks again for all your help! 🙂
