AVI files and Macs
Posted by Jeff Cochran on July 9, 2005 at 3:11 amHello,
Can anyone tell me how I can view AVI files on my Macintosh. I’d also like to work with them AE.
Is this possible?
Thanks in advance

July 9, 2005 at 5:30 pmAs far as playing them, if it is a codec that QT uses, it seems to play fine for me. If it’s not, you can go to versiontracker.com and there should be converter programs.
Why would you voluntarily want to use AVI when there are all the codecs in Quicktime and the universal codecs like targa, IFF, and so on?

July 9, 2005 at 9:48 pmAs the previous post mentions, it depends on the codecs of the AVIs (many possibilities). If the codec is one that’s available for Macs, install it and play the AVIs.
It’s not always easy to know the codecs of AVIs unless you want to run them all through software like ‘GSpot Codec Info’ or the unlikely scenario that you’re generating all the AVIs yourself (if so, just make them QuickTime instead). So, if they’re available for Macs, maybe install one of the ‘every-codec-known-to-man’ type packs from someplace like k-litemegacodecpack.com instead of trying to do them one at a time as you realize a particular AVI won’t play on your Macs.
I do a lot of cross-platform work so I decided it was just easier to get in the habit of converting AVIs (and MPEG1s) to QuikTime via software like Canopus ProCoder (my opinion…the best), Sorenson Squeeze (pretty darn good too) or Cleaner (my opinion…use to be the best, but now the worst).

July 11, 2005 at 2:21 amThanks for the Info guys. I eventually found this thru version tracker. (https://www.3ivx.com)
Software to convert AVI’s to QTs.The reason I needed this, is I have a client who wants me to match some previous animations. The only samples they had were old AVI files.
Thanks again for the help
