  • AVI file has no video – 64bit Vegas Pro 9, dvh1 codec… options?

    Hey all,
So, I captured video/audio from a Panasonic Camera with DVCProHD tapes. I had to use Adobe OnLocation to do it, because Vegas for some reason would not recognize the device.

I have AVI files now, which play fine in Windows Media Player, but when I bring them into the Vegas Pro 9 (64bit) timeline, it is two tracks of Audio ONLY, there is NO video.

I’ve read on the forum that it is a codec issue – which I suspected, and I used GSpot, which tells me the following:
    Video Codec: dvh1
    Name: Pinnacle DVDHD100

I have searched for a 64bit dvh1 codec, and find nothing. Can this be true? I have searched hi and low to no avail. I am searching “64 bit dvh1 codec”… is that what I should be searching?

If there is NO solution, I guess I could bring the AVI files into Sorenson and render them out as something else – but that would degrade the video and audio wouldn’t it? Is there a way to render out another file in Sorenson without compressing the footage?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Is this my only option? To pay $160 to be able to use this video in Vegas??

The solution is to buy the Raylight Decoder for $45 USD.

    Hey John:

I did call Raylight, but they said their product would not decode the AVI files – only quicktime files that were exported from FCP.

    Thanks

Oh that’s right, you said that you captured them with OnLocation. I’m not sure what to do it that case. Maybe they can be converted to CineForm with NeoScene?

    Hey John,
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it – but unfortunately – although Neoscene can output to avi – it cannot convert avi – which is kind of weird.

I did however find out that Premiere Pro has the ability to export to cineform AVI…

I basically ended up pulling the AVI created by OnLocation into Premiere Pro, and am exporting it using the Cineform codec as an AVI, with the most lossless / highest quality settings possible – and the resultant file is readable in Vegas. I could just edit it in PP, but I don’t know my way around that program, and just want to work in Vegas where I know my way around really well. Uugh…

That was good solution. Glad you got it worked out. Editing with CineForm should be much smoother anyway.
