AVI export in PPro is only 8bit (even with a 10bit project, and 10bit export settings)
Hallo,
In addition to the problem of 10bit effects and transtions which are only processed in 8bit in Premiere Pro 1.5 on a WinXP system
(Re: 10 or 8bit Software Codec BMD-HD on WindowsXP? by Luke Maslen on Nov 24, 2005 at 5:18:25 am)
I found out that if I export a 10bit BMD 4:2:2 file with a 10bit project the processing is only 8bit, too.
As a “prove” I used the Blackmagic Decklink Framelink Tool to mount a 10bit 4:2:2 YUV AVI file as multiple 10bit DPX files. These files were then imported in combustion4 and a 10bit step wedge with a width of 1024 has been added. After exporting and reinserting these DPX files into the AVI and unmounting it I imported it in Premiere Pro where I could see the gradient in the image. But after exporting this file with the exact same codec and mounting it to DPX as before there were a change in value every third or fourth pixel meaning only 8bit. In the file which I originally changed and which I remounted to be sure, the gradient with all 1024 steps were still in the DPX files (according to combustion4). But not in the file exported by Premiere Pro.
I tried several combinations of project presets and export setting of the Blackmagic Decklink Compiler, with and without the recompression setting, but I was unable to get the 10bit exported correctly. In the Premiere Pro forum I asked the same question with the result, that at least one answered that he did the same DPX inserting test and he had the same problems with After Effects, too. (Is the OpenHD certificate just a fake (for real 10 bit editting)?)
This means the Blackmagic Decklink Compiler can not export in real 10bit.What’s the use of 10bit playback capabilities of the HD-SDI output, if exported 10bit files which you want to play back are only 10bit with 8bit processing?
Are there any efforts to change this embarrassing situation (for a “10bit” product)?Regards
Diethelmps: two systems having Decklink HD cards installed are OpenHD certified. And 10bit editing is one of the tests for this certificate:
