  • AVI clips in Sony Vegas Pro 10 aren’t showing up in my project

Posted by Amber Rivera on January 10, 2011 at 9:08 am

I am using Vegas Pro 10, and I had saved a project when I was using Vegas 7.0. Well I still have the clips in the same folders and everything. I hit “open” while using Vegas 10 and yes it opens, but for most of my .avi clips, it shows a codec error. Does vegas need a specific codec installed?

will the k-lite codec do the trick?

also, the fx that I had used in vegas 7, is there any way for me to use those same packages in vegas 10? I have them all saved, but I’m not sure how to install them, if that’s what you even do. NewBlue Fx are part of it too and I already have those installed

k-lite will do all kinds of tricks… on you. Do not install a codec pack as you may wind up doing more harm than good as some of your default codecs that Vegas uses (superior codecs) can be replaced by less stable, less quality codecs.

Download g-spot and see what codec is wrapped in the avi wrapper. Once you know what you are missing you need to find a VFW (video for windows) version of the codec (you may already have it under your Vegas 7 install or app data folder). But once you know what it is, you should be able to find it.

As for the fx used in 7, you will have to provide names if you want specific help. Otherwise, go to the fx’s website and download the most current versions. Some things that work in 7 don’t work in 8 or above unless the creator (or someone else) updates and compiles the code in such a way that it is compliant with the newer version of Sony Vegas.

Gspot worked for a few of my clips, however, on some, it shows the codec is indeed installed, but I am still not able to import those ones into a vegas project.

    What codec was used?
If they’re Divx or Xvid, that could be the problem.

one of the clips is .avi used with cinepak codec and some of the others are .avi used with indeo 5 x codec

do you have any suggestion of what to do? Or know of a good file converting program where I can just convert them to wmv files so they will for sure open.

another question…I have NewBlueFX installed on my comp, and my original project uses them, but when I open the project on vegas 10, it won’t support it. is there a newer version of NewBlue I need to use?

The cinepak and indeo codecs (very old codecs, BTW) show up as render options on my computer in Pro 10.
I’m running XP Pro though so if you’re running Vista or Windows 7, they may no longer be supported but I have no idea.

“I have NewBlueFX installed on my comp, and my original project uses them, but when I open the project on vegas 10, it won’t support it. is there a newer version of NewBlue I need to use?”

Contact NewBlue as Pro 10 introduced something called OpenFX architecture and you’ll probably need to upgrade.
I think it’s free but let them tell you for sure.
