I use the UpShift program to create proxy files for Vegas Pro 8.1
I am new to this process. Should I somehow switch back to the orginal files before final rendering? Is there much of a quality loss just using the proxy?

UpShift should probably not be used to make proxies because it has no way to switch back. You should use UpShift to make full quality HDV substitutes for your AVCHD files and then work with those.

Thanks for your reply. I was just curious. The rendered files look great with UpShift as is.
