  • Automatic Mask Creation on Still Image?

Posted by Jay Blanchard on August 31, 2005 at 2:18 pm

Does anyone know if there is anyway (either in AE or with a plug-in) to automatically create a mask around a cropped still photo? Here’s my example–I cropped my image in Photoshop (used pen tool, made selection, deleted background, etc.) then brought it into AE 6.5. Now I would like to render an animated stroke along the image’s outer edges.

Does the .psd file carry my original work path in anyway? If not, is there anyway I can create the path in AE without having to retrace my image? (I need to do this for dozens of images, so it would be a huge timesaver).

    Thanks!

not sure if PS paths translate to AE automatically, however if you try using:

    Layer > Autotrace

a mask will be created around the alpha channel of your layer.

you can even autotrace many layers at one time.

Save the path you have created in Photoshop as a work path, then go file > export > paths to illustrator.

Open the illustrator file you now have and then simply copy and paste the mask onto your image. You might need to shift it around a bit and adjust expansion and handles, but it should be the same size

Just a note in case it helps:
If you want a rectangular (or circle) mask put around your footage simply doulbe-click on the mask tool in the tools pallette.
