Automated way to process LowerThirds? (Video verit
I recently recorded an important business meeting onto MiniDV. The raw footage took up all of one 60 minute tape and most of a second one. I have received requests to make a DVD of the meeting.
I use:
Final Cut Pro 4.5
DVD Studio Pro 2

You won’t have problem capturing long clips. But there is no way for a computer to recognize a speaker and have it automatically put their lower third in. That is what humans are for. Assuming you have all your lower thirds (photoshop, png, motion, After efffects) in a folder in your bin, you will have to manually drop theimage into the correct place on the timeline. You can certainly make it faster by scrubbing through the timeline faster until you see someone you want to put a lower third under.

I received a really unusual suggestion on the DV Creators’ forum from moderator Josh…
[ The only thing I can say is make a lower third you really like, then stratch it as far as you can.
Then razor blade whenever you need the text to change (or when you want it gone).
Use “the Open” mode from the Viewer to automatically open each title when your playhead is over it without double-clicking. ]

You simply create your first lower third, then Copy it. Now simply Paste into the timeline whenever you need the next lower third. Double click it into the Viewer and make your changes. By Copying the first one, you save your formatting.
If you need a longer one than the standard 1:30 that FCP defaults to, drag the first Lower third into the Browser. Go into the Duration column and change this to something that suits your needs like 5:00 or so. Now when you need a lower third, just drag it from the Browser to your timeline.
This is how you would do a long ID bug. If you need it for the entire 60 minutes, just create the title in the Viewer. Drag it to the Browser. Change the Duration to 60 minutes, then drag it into the timeline.
