    Hey all,

I’ve got a video layer, the voice layer (from the video), and I added an MP3 as background music. Throughout my video, there are people talking off and on. I want to have the music MP3 track automatically give way to the voices when they appear (thus the MP3 volume would automatically be lower when people are talking, then increase back to regular volume when there are silent voids in the voice track.

I can see the visual peaks/valleys deal in my voice track. Those are the points when the MP3 should drop in volume. Is there a way to do this automatically? Thanks!

Side chain compression will do what you want.
    Check out…

for some good info and where to download a free one at.

If Steven’s suggestion (great idea – thanks!!) is too much for you, here’s the manual way.
Click the music track to highlight it and press the “V” key for Volume envelope.
You’ll need to add 4 points (double-click the line twice before and twice after each voice section) to each section that you want to lower the music for the voices to be heard.
After adding the 4 points, drag the centre down to the desired background level.
    Repeat as necessary.

and if you have the cash, you can buy the Excalibur plugin for vegas, which does a good job in a couple of clicks

AND it’s at half price on http://www.digitaljuice.com right now, under ‘Partner Products’

    🙂

I use Excalibur every time I am in Vegas. It is great to have for those little things. Quick and easy. Been using it from the time it was called Tsunami.

Thanks for the tip. I finally figured out what you were talking about and yes, I think that’s just what I’m looking for.

However, can anyone tell me if there is a way to type in the value or more easily snap to a value or something? When I’m dragging the audio envelope line in different areas, it’s hard to position it exactly the same as before.

Never mind. I figured out the right click “set to…” option.
