I have a question about the difficulty that computers have when looking at a waveform in a timeline. NLE’s all seem to have an awful time generating and keeping waveforms on their timeline without majorly slowing down the process.

This problem is especially true in After Effects.

Does anyone know any trciks to help speed up that problem?

    I am working on a G5 dual 3.0 ghz w/ 4ghz RAM.

    Thanks in advance,
    Terry

If you zoom into the timeline, it will have to show less data, and thus there will be less slowdown.

Not really. Either split your audio clips into smaller chunks and reveal onl the parts you are working on or zoom in as Steve said. AE does not have optimized drawing routines for this nor does it have cache files for the peak display as many of the apps you mentioned do.
