  • Audio Track Static from group of .avi files recorded from BlackMagic Intensity Pro

I was recording my Xbox 360 with my BlackMagic Intensity Pro the other night and all the footage I recorded seems to have audio track problems. Whenever I load the clips into Sony Vegas or YouTube the audio track is pure static, no sound at all.

I played it off as just a one time error because every other day since then the audio tracks have been just fine.

But I did record one sequence that I will not be able to re-do because it’s kind of a one and done event and so I really need that clip to work both video and audio.

The weirdest thing about the .avi file is that when I open it with zoom player or Windows media player I can hear the audio just fine, it’s only when I load the file to Sony Vegas or YouTube that the audio track goes to all static.

So the audio track must be contained somewhere if I can listen to it just fine in a player, why can’t vegas or youtube render it correctly?

I have uploaded a sample so you can see, but I would turn down your audio before playing the sample because the static is very loud and annoying:

The first sample is something I rendered through Sony Vegas as an .mp4

The second sample is the direct .avi file I had recorded from BMIP and uploaded to youtube.

    Both are full of static.

I also took a screenshot of what the audio track looks like in Sony Vegas:

I’m hoping someone might be able to shed some light as to why I can hear the audio just fine with a player but the track is pure static elsewhere.

I have no idea what may have caused the issue but if the video and audio plays fine in another media player and you’re on a desktop system, just re-record the audio from the media player into Vegas or another DAW.

It can be a bit tricky to setup but many desktop audio cards have a “stereo mix” or similar input device that will record what you hear (it may be disabled, right click on audio devices and “show disabled devices”), play the video in a media player and record the audio in real time from there into Vegas or another audio workstation.

Just make sure to play it through the audio card and not some external USB speakers or an ASIO device. The cards will only record “what you hear” if it’s passing through the system card.

You’ll have to sync it back up to the vegas video but it all may be less frustrating than trying to figure out what went wrong. If it’s from a video there should be a clear start point so it won’t be too hard to sync up. If you can hear it play correctly anywhere, record it and use the new audio track in Vegas with the vid.

P.S. I’m no video pro, I’m an audio engineer, I’m just trying to “give back” a little for all the great help I’ve gotten here. Good luck.

Or (duh!, sorry) – this just occurred to me – try some other DAWs like Reaper (https://www.reaper.fm) that load video. If the audio track plays fine there just extract it there and use that file in Vegas.

I’d try the above first before trying to record it.

Thanks for the responses.. I tried all of those programs you recommended but all of them had the static track.

And unfortunately my onboard realtek audio does not have the ability to run the sound through stereo mix, I read for hours on forums to figure out it was not possible.

I did finally figure it out though. I installed a sound recorder that uses a virtual driver to play software sound through the program then I recorded the audio from windows media player into a .wav file and cut it onto the original video footage.

Thanks for your help you guided me in the right direction
