Audio synch issue
We have been shooting 60 fps on our Varicam AJ-HDC27H. I have captured footage into Final Cut Pro using Serial Digital through a Kona 3 set to DVC Pro-HD 59.94 with an AJ-1200 for playback. I’ve also captured DVC Pro-HD 720p60 through firewire. Regardless of capture mode, the audio is always 4 frames ahead of the video. The problem also appears when monitoring the playback of the 1200 straight to a monitor as opposed to going through FCP, so I assume that the problem is occuring when recording footage with the Varicam. Has anybody else experienced this problem, and what can be done to correct it besides trying to synch the audio in FCP?

Jon,
The video processing in the Varicam normally puts the audio two frames ahead of the video; this is because it takes more crunching to compress the picture than sound. The “H” model however has an option in the VTR memu that delays the audio so the recording is in dead sync; just be careful if you use this not to mix H’s and F’s on the same shoot or you’ll have a real mess in post.
