  • Audio suggestions for filming in a warehouse with echo?

Posted by Don Hertz on March 10, 2010 at 6:10 pm

I’m preparing to spend 3 days filming on a set constructed in a medium sized warehouse. I was concerned about audio echo in the space and so did some tests yesterday. Sure enough, the talent voice audio recorded from 2 lav microphones has a pretty good amount of echo to the voices.

My thoughts to fix it prior to filming are:

    1. Switch to a shotgun mic on boom pole
    2. Position sound blankets on floor and hanging to sides of talent.

Should I do both of these or will just one take care of it? Any other thoughts that might help?

I don’t currently own any sound blankets so I would need to purchase them. Any suggestions for less expensive alternatives or good places to get them?

    Thanks for any help.

    1. A proper shotgun on a pole is your best bet.
If you can afford it and he/she is available, I highly recommend hiring a professional sound person as they have all the gear and, more importantly, know how to use it properly.

    2. Try looking up “moving supply” or “moving companies” in the yellow
pages to rent furniture pads, moving blankets, etc.
These are good enough for the pro sound folks so they should be good enough for you 🙂

I had thought about moving blankets, but hadn’t considered just renting them. Good idea.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    You’re quite welcome.
I got the suggestion on the RAMPS (Rec Arts Movies Production Sound newsgroup, an excellent pro audio forum that I lurk on constantly looking for audio tips & tricks.
