  • Audio Settings with Tone?

Sorry for this silly question. We have been working with our M100 system until the editing drives went down…so, I had to use our FCP system…which by-the-way I like better…anyway I’m confused on the bars&tone setting. I notice when I set my tone from our betaSP machine before digitizing they read at -16 or -17 in FCP. Well, as I started to digitize some interviews I noticed that the audio levels looked very low in FCP but not on the tape…My question is when I set up my timeline to master back to betaSP, what level do I need to set my bars&tone at on my time line and at what level would be ok (ok meaning not peaking) for my interview audio levels? I know….silly question.
thnx and youre welcome for the laff

-12. Digitize to -12 and output to -12.

FCP defaults to 0 vu dbm = -12 dbfs
Sony machines default to 0 vu dbm = -20 dbfs
Not sure what capture/output card you are using but on our systems we set tone to -20. This corresponds to 0 vu dbm on the Sony machines BSP, dBeta and HDCam.
Most broadcast facilities/Networks will kick back anything over -10 dbfs on tape
