I’ve been having recurring problems with audio when capturing the past few months. I am using FCP 5.1.2, on a Mac G5, 2gb RAM. I am capturing DV NTSC with audio recorded at 16 bit/48khz via firewire. The capture pre-sets and sequence pre-sets are also set at 48khz. During capture, I hear what sounds like distorion, cracks, pops, and drop outs. However, it sounds fine simultaneously coming out of the external speakers hooked up to the deck, and the levels are not peaking at all. When I tried recapturing these same clips, the drop outs, distortion, etc., would still happen, but at different points on the tape. Even stranger, sometimes the same tape will capture with no problems at all. I also thought i may have been just hearing this during preview, but even the captured clips still have the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be causing this? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Do you have your MONITORING set so that you hear the audio from the computer…
    DURING the CAPTURE?

If so, disable that and do not monitor audio via the computer audio DURING CAPTURE, but only listen from the camera’s audio.

Hey Matte. Thanks for your help. Do you mean just simply uncheck the audio preview box in the log and capture window to mute the audio during capture, or should i disable the audio in some system preference setting (if so, where do I go to do so? I’m fairly new to the mac world)?

[nosweatjonny] “o you mean just simply uncheck the audio preview box in the log and capture window to mute the audio during capture,”

    Yes, that.

Then give it a try and let us know.

I gave it a try and it is working great! No pops, cracks, distortion, or drop outs! Thanks a lot – you saved us all a lot of stress! I’ve been trying to troubleshoot this one for months. Take care.a
