  • Audio Monitoring Question on new Multibridge Extreme

    Just got the Multibridge Extreme, yet to arrive. I was just looking at the manual and I see that the AES/EBU signal goes in/out over a DB-25 connector. I have a Tascam digital mixer with an AES/EBU breakout box (8 channels — XLRx4 in each direction).

    So I can go in/out the mixer either with XLR AES/EBU or directly in one of the mixer’s TDIF ports, which is, I believe, also a DB-25 connector. The manual states: “DB-25 pin outs also compatable with Yamaha, Mackie, Sony and Apogee connectors.” No mention of Tascam or TDIF, or XLR AES/EBU. Are these all the same pinout diagrams as in the Multibridge Extreme manual pg 3.3?

    I see there are DB-25 -> XLR snake cables (see below), but I’d rather go in the TDIF connectors, which see to have different pinouts than the one used in the Multibridge from what I can tell. Any thoughts here?

    Adam… No no no no no…!!!! Dont connect the Multibrige extreme 25 pin connector to the TDIF!!!!… They are 2 different types of digital signal… you could risk fritzing both ends… The Multibrige extreme uses discrete AES type digital and the Tascam TDIF is not compatible as it uses its own propriety version which includes syncronising stuff. If you want to go from MBX <> TDIF you can use a Tascam IF-88AE or an IF-AE8 which do 8 channels (4 x 2) conversions both ways.

    I have an IF AE8 and was planning to use it, though I was hoping there was a custom cabling option to go direct.

    With the IF AE8 I still need some sort of breakout cable, right? (DB-25 <-> 2XLR x 4 x 2)

    YES – you will need the IF AE8, and a standard 25 pin to XLR break out cable, that is sold by every mail order catalog in the world. This is a generic cable (standardized by Tascam) but is the same format even used by current Pro Tools products. This is not a “custom” cable, and is readily available (but not from Radio Shack). Of course, you could monitor via the analog outputs right into a cheapo analog mixer, or your analog inputs. It won’t sound any better monitoring from the AES outputs.
