I have a finished mix with peaks at -18dB mix

I am printing to a minidv tape and as far as I remember it can only properly deal with -12dB on peaks

is this correct and if so what will happen?

also if I used DVCAM using firewire would this make a difference (as I remember it can deal with -18dB peaks)

    thanks

FC was designed as a tool to make movies for the TV. As the old average TV set have a very little dynamic range sound, -12 Db is considered a good “Average level” for for TV sets,
and -6DB for the picks. You can see how the colr changes at those levels in the FC’s audiometer.
People working with 10b Unc, set the Average level to -20 DB because is the DigiBeta Desk level. But when broadcasted this signal will be compressed.
If you go to finish in a DVD, the same. -12 works fine and will sound great in TV set and computers.
If you film will be played with theater like audio system, set the average level at -20Db and peeks at -6Db.

In my experience -20db is what the tone with the bars is set so the person playing it back can properly calibrate the playback deck.

Most of what comes into my facility uses -10 as the absolute peak though going to -6 on occasion is not a problem.

I see lots of material (music videos for example) that are slammed at -10, the audio is not dynamic enough to be anywhere but there most of the time. This is VERY common.

As long as you are not using 0 as peak you should be fine.
I see that from time to time coming in on DV tapes from people who don’t know any better.
