I downloaded files from a sony hd handycam which records directly to a hard drive in the camera. The files were .MPG and played fine on the PC I downloaded them on. I then copied the files to an external drive and brought them into a mac system. In the mac environment the files have no audio? Is there a way to find the audio on these files for FCP?

Sometimes you find .mpg audio is muxed (embedded) within the clip and won’t read within final cut. I would suggest downloading “mpeg streamclip” and try de-muxing the clip.

If the mpeg is muxed. (It probably is) You need to rip the audio separately from the muxed mpeg and bring it into Final Cut Pro. Just line it up with your video track and you should be good to go. MPEG Streamclip is great free program. Easy to use and very effective.

Actually, a better solution would be to use Streamclip to transcode those files, video and audio, to another variety of Quicktime codec.

    Hey Dave,

I’m actually trying to accomplish getting an mpeg2 WITH AUDIO for delivery to a station. I have it in avi format. How do I convert an avi to mpeg2 WITH embedded audio?
