  • Audio crackles going from FCP on MacPro to AJ-HD1400

Posted by Wynn Winberg on July 23, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Sorry if this is old news. I have not had this problem before. When I output via HD-SDI to my Panny HD deck, the audio is crackling and almost sounds overdriven. If I switch to analogue – it’s pristine and clean.

I have an AJA Kona LH card, a MacPro bought in Dec 2007, the latest FCP and of course the deck. I trashed all pref files that I could find for FCP and Kona. I have SD black burst going to the Kona and deck, and the Kona is set to “ref in.”

I’m hoping someone will criticize me for not searching harder because it’s s known issue and easy to fix! But so far I have not found the solution.

    Thanks

    What’s your reference set to?

since your Kona is set to REF IN, may I suggest the following (and you are not going to like it). Buy an AJA GEN10, set it to output HD sync (tri level sync) at 720, 59.94. Use this instead of your NTSC black generator, to feed your 1400 and Kona Reference IN. I had a client with this issue (and am running plenty of systems like this with a normal black gen like a Horita BSG-50), but out of desperation, I put in the GEN10, switched to tri level sync, and the problem went away. When you get the GEN10, go into your AJA Control Panel, and make sure that it sees the 59.94 signal.

I assume you are using an AJ-HD1400 or AJ-HD1200A, and not an old AJ-HD130 or 150.

You assume correctly, Bob- it’s the 1400 deck.

My black burst generator is the one I got when I bought my GVG-200 switcher in the late 80’s, so I guess it’s time to upgrade. But you’re right… don’t like it. 😉

    Thx

You can also set the ref to video in as long as your deck in and out is connected to the kona. you can set the deck ref to video in as well.

    You can try freerun too.

This is a long shot, Is your audio 16 or 24 bit. Digibeta cannot receive 16 bit over SDI and it may be a similar problem on the Panasonic deck.

    It’s 24 bit audio.

I’m gonna try the Gen10. I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy one anyway. If that doesn’t work, I’ll send out another SOS, and send Bob the bill…

Check out the Big Brain on Bob Zelin!

I just got the Gen10 and, after searching for a magnifying glass with which to set the dip switches – voila! My HD-SDI embedded audio is clean as a whistle.

    Thanks for the help guys.
