Audio channels question…

February 15, 2006 at 7:11 pmI have a question about selecting audio channels. I have some Quicktime files that have 8 channels of audio and I have to import them into FCP. Is there a way in FCP that I can only select or deselect audio channels for use in the timeline? I can’t change the Quicktime files, it would take too much time.

February 15, 2006 at 7:14 pmYou should be able to put the QT movies in the Viewer, then de select the tracks in the timeline you don’t want to edit in… just click on the track selection buttons you don’t want to edit and they’ll pull away from the tracks in the timeline window.

February 15, 2006 at 7:43 pmThanks, Jerry. I’ve been doing that already but I was hoping there was a way in the Browser window to deselect tracks. You know, some undocumented trick to doing this.
To explain myself better, I’m using the Flip4Mac MXF importer plugin and it converts the raw MXF files into Quicktime files with all eight channels. But here’s my problem. I only record four channels in the field and sometimes less. The plugin doesn’t allow for choosing the audio channels you want. Such as, I went on a shoot and only used two channels of audio on the disc (XDCAM) – so I only need two channels. But the plugin converts the files and makes them with all eight channels of audio.
Kinda puts me in a pickle and wastes time when I have to drop them to the timeline and then delete the channels that I do not need. I was just hoping someone out there knew of a trick that I could save time and select the channels that I need. By the way, yes, I have already contacted Flip4Mac and made my suggestion to them. Funny, I was the first person to suggest this since the plugin has been out since NAB last year.

February 15, 2006 at 9:40 pmAs far as I know, there’s no way to automatically delete certain audio tracks from a QT movie from within FCP…

February 15, 2006 at 10:03 pmWell…. I was afraid of that…. But can’t hurt to hope that there was an undocumented secret that someone knew.
