During testing for another issue, I noticed an Audio output issue that I’m unable to resolve. I’m relatively new to the AJA Io, so please bear with me as I try to explain as clearly as I can what I’ve noticed. I could use some troubleshooting tips.

The bottom line is that the mono outputs from the AJA do not seem to work correctly. If I create a sequence in FCP with just bar and tones and play it, audio for Tracks 1 and 2 both seem to be routed through the Ch. 2 Out on the AJA. It seems to be a stereo track passed through that one Channel out. The audio quality for stereo audio is fine, but I’ve found that if I have sequences that are set to have Dual Mono output, the audio is heard as a distorted combination of both Tracks 1 and 2.

We’re using FCP 4.5 on a 2.5 HGz PowerPC G5 with 4.5GB of RAM. The AJA Io is connected via Firewire 400 to the back of the G5. The audio from the G5, the AJA board, and our Panasonic DVCPro50 deck is all monitored independently through a Mackie 1202-VLZPro mixing board using either the headphone out or the Control Room out. The deck is also connected to the AJA Io via SDI.

FCP has the Playback Output Audio set to ProIO Out and the AJA Io Output setting in the Control Panel currently has SDI Embedded output checked. (If you uncheck this and then start up the Control Panel, it just checks itself again.)

Any suggestions or explanation? Perhaps this is the way it’s supposed to output for Stereo clips? Why the problem with the Dual Mono sequences?

    Thanks in advance,
    Scott B.

Stereo outs to the AJA Io should be going Track 1 to channel 1 and track 2 to channel 2. Do you have the tracks in FCP panned left and right? When you have the audio set up as dual mono, do you have the same thing on tracks 1 & 2 ? Sometimes this can cause phase cancellation which would account for the distortion. If you just have a mono source then delete the 2nd track and just pan track 1 to center.

    Hi Scott –
I would like to address your audio distortion issue. If you simply bring up bars and tone from within FCP, and play it back, do you hear distortion on the tone signal? Is your AJA I/O plugged into the 1/4″ TRS line input of your Mackie 1202 (the correct input) or the XLR mic input (the incorrect input to use). Exactly what speakers and amplifier are you using to monitor with ?

    Thanks –
