Audio Calibration w/ Test Tones
Forgive me if this has already been answered. I searched the web & the forum and couldn’t find the solution.
I have several microphones I’d like to establish a common sound between theme using the tone. I have a simple test tone generator and would like to play several tones at the beginning of my clips. Then adjust the audio sources to match in post.
Does anybody know how to adjust the audio in post for the specific frequencies I generate with my tone generator? I have the basic version of Sound Forge & Sony Vegas Pro 10.

The reason modern digital cameras don’t have a sample tone (but almost all of them do color bars) is because in the digital world, reference tones are irrelevant. They were critical for level control in analog world where everything was a contributing variable. Some old (key word, old) pros will disagree with me, but in digital recording, as long as you don’t clip the input audio you are safe and you set your final levels in post. I adjust my input levels to peak between -6 to -3 dB depending on the source. It’s low enough to not clip and high enough to give me all the headroom I need in post.
Cameras still provide color reference bars because every camera model processes colors differently. Take a Canon and a similar Sony camera and shoot the same scene at the same time and at the same settings, and there will be a color difference between them. You can shoot and color balance a white card at the start to minimize the differences.
But audio – just don’t clip.
