  • Audio and video out of sync…

Posted by Michael Weitzel on March 16, 2009 at 5:40 pm

    HI there,

I’ve come across a (hopefully) basic issue… I am importing a wedding video from a Panasonic NV-DS60. At first I did a test import to see what the quality would be like, everything seemed to be all right then. Afterwards I imported some 48 minutes of the camera. Once I started reviewing that material I found that the video and the audio signal are not in sync anymore. It looks like the video lags about 1s behind the audio… pretty strange since this was definitely one of the things that I paid attention to during the short test import (there both were in sync).

Now my question is how to go about separating the video and audio track to align them again? Is there a workflow for that? Thanks for any pointers! (Also if somebody has any idea why the audio is out of sync in the first place that would be much appreciated.)

    Regards,
    Mike.

    Michael–

I am having the exact same problem. About one second out of sync. Using FCP 6.0.5 on DV-NTSC. How did you solve the problem?

    Thanks.

What sample rate do you shoot 12-bit or 16-bit?

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything’s connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you’re using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime are you using.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Hi Paul,

here is what I ended up doing (worked for me):
    1. Save the full clip you want to sync as a self-contained MOV file
    2. open the MOV file in QuickTime
    3. Export the audio tracks as AIFF (Export: Sound to AIFF; Use: )
    4. import the audio track into your project
    5. Place the un-sync’ed clip on the timeline
    6. move the playhead 1sec into the timeline (if you have to adjust it here exactly depending on the on the lag you have with your material)
    7. Drag the new audio track to the timeline (onto audio track 3 & 4) so that it snaps to your playhead at 1sec
    8. Mute the original audio channels of the clip
    9. check that audio and video are in sync
    10. Save again as a self-contained MOV file and reimport it into your project
    11. use the new MOV file to do your video editing

    Hope this makes sense… =)

    Mike.
