I am getting to grips with this software but every now and then something that is standard workflow for me becomes a massive problem.
Just to give me a feel for how something is coming together I like to leave some music underneath the edit at low level…just helps me with pace and general vibe…what kind of music works and what doesn’t.
But I really don’t want it to be connect to anything and I can’t sam to find a way round htis. Even if I make it a primary story line it still has to hang onto something…can I undo this?
Sometimes with this software I can’t help thinking about what I hate most about Microsoft Word, which, I find tries to be too helpful and constantly interferes when I am writing the date …it has to be formatted one way or another and MS Word won’t just let me write the date anyway I like.
I would like to be able to toggle off connectors for a clip if I want to. I would also like to toggle off the magnetic timeline if I want to instead of incessantly having to hit P before I move something down the timeline. It’s brilliant – I can see that but it’s also intensely irritating at times.
Any help or thoughts much appreciated.

Do this. Start a new project. Hit Opt-W to add a gap clip to the primary storyline. Then, Cntl-D to change the gap duration to whatever lenght your piece is. After that, put everything else on secondary story lines as connected clips to the gap clip. Staying out of the primary will keep everything working like you want. You’ll lose some functionality with transitions and trimming, but this works.
I tend to think of the primary now as a timeline marker for cutting specific duration projects (like commercials or promos).

I do. We do everything to avoid FCP7 now.
It’s forced us to think in a different manner about editing. With 5 updates this far in a year, I think it’s getting more and better features added with each release. As soon as XtoPro offers handles (and perhaps strips filters off audio clips) that will be perfect. Audio export is currently our least favorite part.

….and maybe a permanent toggle off for magnetic timeline? And proper trimming in other layers? And OMF export? And slip into or move into sync? Basic functions we all need to do fast and not workaround which I would have thought were simple features. And lock off tracks?
there is so much there that is to be applaud but simple functions like that …why not have them there?
why omit such basic functions?
you can leave without these…or do they annoy you also?
