Attention all Boris FX 8 and FCP5.1.2 users
I know there have been recent issues concerning FCP and transitions in Boris FX and RED. I just got a clear answer back from the Boris support team that sheads some light on instant crashes I was having with Boris FX8 and FCP 5.1.2. Just thought I’d post it here incase it can be useful to others and save you some time. I tried the workaround -a bit tedious- but it works.
From Boris support:
In upgrading from FCP 5.1.1 to 5.1.2, Apple
adjusted the code in a way that adds, in a sense, a roadblock for our
transitions, which is causing FCP to crash (FCP goes idle while RED
is active, but it’s not able to go fully active, so the entire system
goes down). However, filters and generators do still work, and because of this
problem, we have made a .pdf file that will illustrate a
work-around. What this illustrates is how to adjust the timeline
clips and use the Media Well’s to create a transition using a
filter. I have it attached and hope that it will help you with this
for the time being.PDF file – copy and pasted here:
Setup the video tracks in order to
create an A/B transition where the
incoming video (A) is above the
outgoing video (B) and the
overlap is the desired length of
the transition.Add cuts to the tracks in
order to isolate the area the
transition will be.Apply the Boris RED 4.0 filter to the
trimmed clip in V2 and double-click the
clip to load it into the Viewer window.
Select the Filters tab and you should
see the Boris RED 4.0 filter, drag the
trimmed clip from V1 into the well
labeled Video 2 in the Viewer widow.
Now when you enter Boris RED V1
will be the incoming media and V2 will
be the outgoing media just as it was in
the older transition. All of the prebuilt
transitions our Library should work
correctly with the setup as well.Dual 2.7 GHz G5, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9650, Xserve RAID, AJA IO, 2 20″ Cinema Display, FCP 5.03, OS X10.4.3
