  • attaching a layer of video to a mask from another layer?

Posted by Maryanne Hamill on March 28, 2008 at 8:49 pm

I have a layer of video with a moving TV screen in it. I masked the center of the TV screen out. Now I want to add another piece of video into the mask shape while it’s moving. I thought I could pickwhip an expression from the mask shape to the position property of the video I want in the center of the TV screen. I guess I can’t do that. Expressions don’t work with masks. At least that’s what I read. How would you suggest I attach this video to the mask? I created position keyframes on the video to have it some what match the movement of the mask. That works but I’m sure there’s a easier way.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Go to frame 1 in your comp or the first frame where the TV appears.
Put the layer you want to be in the TV screen underneath the masked layer.
    Resize appropriately.
Make sure to mask the excess of the layer that resides underneath.
Parent the layer underneath to the TV layer on top.

If you’re trying to do what I think you’re trying to do that will work.

    Good Luck

I want the video to move with the mask not reveal thru it. -M

Also I can’t motion track the TV screen object. It’s a round shape with other objects moving over the top of it. I tried.

    In response to Thad’s idea.
The video or layer doesn’t move just the mask with in it moves. I don’t know how parenting would help. Unless you could parent the mask from that layer?

In response to Dave LaRonde’s idea:
I’ll try that but there’s really nothing to track to. It doesn’t have any knobs or anything. It’s kind of an abstract TV. I’ll have to take a closer look at the footage though. Thanks-M
