    Hi guys,

Does anyone here know any reason why this Sapphire ATI card would NOT work in my new Mac Pro?

    https://www.dabs4work.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4MW0&CategorySelectedId=11137&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11137,43280000

We already have 2 x ATI Radeon 2600XT’s in the Mac, but obviously they were supplied by Apple when we bought the mac..but they want double the price for what looks essentially like the same card.

The ppl at this retailer don’t know for sure..do ATI make PC or Mac only cards?

    Thanks,
    Jim.

ati does make some mac cards, but i don’t know of any companies making third party mac cards, just apple and ati. even the mac nvidia cards are made by apple. ati does write their drivers for the after market cards, but i believe apple writes all the other drivers for both the ati and nvidia original and build-to-order cards.

i know i’ve read about people who have taken similar pc cards and made them work on a mac, but i don’t think it was a very easy process (re-flashing the rom and such), and i think it was more of an experiment to see if it could be done rather than a permanent solution…

however, you should be able to get the card to work just fine under boot camp, if you want to run windows software on your mac… but if you want to boot osx and use mac software, i think i would stay with a card made for mac.

    Hi Kev,

Thanks for your reply..I know not really an AE question!

That sucks a big one if that’s the case…as it would appear Apple get away with charging double the price for an identical card with different software!? On Intel Macs! Hmmmm….

yep… if you’re the only one making them, you can charge whatever you want.

i’m a bit surprised that a third party vendor hasn’t tried releasing mac versions of their product… if guys are out there flashing pc cards and using apple drivers to run some of these cards, it seems that it shouldn’t be too hard for a company to just make them actually work, particularly if the card design is the same…

    You’d think so wouldn’t you!

I’ve had to order it from Apple now due to not getting an answer from any resellers, or from Sapphire direct. Not worth the risk of it messing up the mac.

you’re right though Kevin…someone is definitely missing a trick there!
