…Ati 2600XT? Nvidia 8800GT?
Hello from a new member,
Im planning to switch to MACPRO (I work on PC based system with CS3) after I see in action FCs, and I have just a basic question: ATI 2600 or NVIDIA 8800? I searchd for many post about it but I really can’t understand what benefits the 8800 could give to the system…and I read this about the card and MOTION: https://www.barefeats.com/harper8.html
Anyone can help me to choice?

That card will make Motion work faster…better frame rates, more RT playback. That card will also allow for better RT performace with FXPlug plugins, the new standard for FCP plugins.
The better the card, the better performance you get from Motion and FXPlugs. OH…and Color. The better performance you get in Color too.

If you like to use Motion or Color, or if you like to play video games on your mac, I’d go with the 8800. If you’re not into those applications, I wouldn’t spend the extra money.

The stock Radeon HD 2600 XT beat the GeForce 8800 GT. We’re puzzled by this when you consider it has twice the VRAM and a faster core. Could the Radeon’s architecture be more optimized for Core Image effects?”

Wow…I hadn’t seen that. So, if you want a gaming machine, get the 8800GT. If you want MOtion to work better…a LOT better, get the stock ATI 2600.

Well, then there are people in the Motion forum desputing these findings.

Saying that they weren’t running the latest OpenGL update. and a buddy of mine has both the 8800 and x1900, says the 8800GT is close to the performance of the x1900 when it comes to Motion.

further complicating your decision is “Color”. If you expect to use Color, you should check with folks in that forum about their experiences.

ATI cards are recommended for Color. They work better than the nVidia cards. I would go with the 2600. I ran a MacPro at the Apple store the other day and Color was very snappy.
Some folks in the Color forum say the 2600 works just fine with Color.

No it doesn’t. First, if you read the entire post and the other related posts, you’ll see that they are still recommending the 8800 over the stock 2600.

Walter, I know you have a perceived bias against the nVidia cards, but where did you get this info?
BTW, this may all be moot. as there are a lot of posts reporting display artifacts and problems with the stock 2600. Check the Apple boards. Apple seems to be aware of this. The solution is for people to buy the 8800 and install it instead.
FWIW, I have an 8800 in my 8 core. I’ve used ATI cards for many years and have been happy, but I can remember when they were crap in the past. It goes back and forth. In the end, you choose what you want. If you’re unhappy, it’s cheap to replace these days. In the end, many of us will go with the faster processor and 512 ram… your mileage may vary.
