    Have talked to apple support, and they can not tell me whether the ati 1900 xt will function in the new MP.

    They say te MP have a brand new chipset etc…

    On the other hand – they did not say anything for certain….

    Does anyone here feel confident to advise me whether it will work?

    That’s a really tough call there. Have you written to ATI Tech Support to ask them?

    One the one hand, it might work. On the other hand, the new MP might damage the card if you try to install it.

    I would definitely ask ATI’s advice on this one.

    This is a link to a Mac area of their website.

    No, that’s not what it says. It’s pretty clear at the bottom:

    All of these cards are only compatible with the family of computers with which they shipped.

    They have split the Mac Pro’s into two family of shipments:

    Family One
    Graphic cards shipped with Mac Pro computers

    * Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT
    * ATI Radeon X1900 XT
    * Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 (part number 630-7532 or 630-7895)

    Family Two
    Graphics cards shipped with Mac Pro (Early 2008) computers

    * ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
    * NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
    * NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600

    So the way I read this is the ATI 1900 works in the first family of Mac Pro computers. It does NOT say that it works in the 2nd family (Early 2008) computers.

    Again, you MUST talk to ATI to find out for sure. What any of us say on this forum doesn’t mean anything. The only way to know for sure is to put the card into your machine. I would NOT advise you to do this unless ATI guarantees that it will work and not be damaged.

    A courageous collegue over here tested it today. It didn’t damage his computer, but it doesn’t work either. When you boot with the original card in the MacPro plus the X1900, the latter is not even seen by system profiler. If you try with only the X1900, the machine doesn’t boot.

    Hope this helps,

    Uli
