    Aloha from Maui,

My first time in this forum. I’ve used the PC platform for many years to turn out a weekly religious broadcast TV show. With Vista looming, I see this as a great time to transition to the MAC. Here’s my question. If it’s better asked in another forum, let me know and I’ll leave quietly… nary a ripple.

I’m using XP running Premiere Pro and AFX (the whole suite actually) on a couple of workstations hooked via gigabit ethernet to a Linux fileser running Samba. I know someone will ask me what filesystem is on the Linux box and the truth is that I don’t know. I’m not even sure how to find out. That’s the wonderful thing about Linux I guess, it just works. You don’t have to play with it. A vendor set it up for me and when something works, I leave it alone. Here’s the question.

Whether via Samba or native Linux/Unix access, will the Mac write to this device? It’s my understanding that OSX will not write to NTFS; read yes, but write no. Does the Linux middle man make things easier or more difficult?

    Hello Ron,

Yes, the Mac is able to write to a NTFS volume, if you allow it from Windows NT.
For linux, its depend of your flavor of Linux.
Mac OSX is able to mount Samba volume and work with. I would say that in theory there is no problem.
If you want to use a server volume to work with in video, I mean capture, render… I strongly suggest you to work with a SAN, XSAN from Apple or other.

    Regards,
    Martial
