    Hi John,

I’ve just ordered one of these, so I’ve been digging into the manual. I was wondering what colour gamut you use it at for video editing. Most of my stuff ends up for web viewing and I guess sRGB would be ideal for that. But I occasionally make clips intended for TV viewing. Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

I calibrate my monitors with a Spyder 3 Elite. I start by using Standard Mode on the display and then I go through the calibration of setting color temp, bright point. etc. and the Spyder sets my display to show true colors (e.g., it generates a color that is known and then reads the color on the screen and sets the profile so that they match). The Spyder also takes an ambient light reading because colors will look different under different lighting conditions so I know I’m getting correct colors based on the ambient light in my editing bay. It also reminds my every 60 days to re-calibrate. If you’re concerned about color reproduction and you’re not using a hardware calibrator like the Spyder, the you should consider it. It takes all of the guess work out.

Thanks for that, John. I’ve thought about getting a Spyder on and off. It’s something I’ll consider once I’ve got a few other pieces of the puzzle in place (I’m in the process of upgrading to a PMW 200 system). Anyway, you’ve quelled my anxiety somewhat. I had been reading in various threads that since different image parameters on the PA246Q are switched off in given modes, plus a certain “non-linearity” of onscreen controls could make user calibration problematic – all rather confusing for me in the end. (I was almost swayed from my purchase, but there’s not much else at this price-point except the Dell u2410.) Your Spyder protocol would I guess generate an icc profile in the PC, which overlays any monitor driven parameters. It’s reassuring to get practical feedback from a professional video-editing perspective and I very much appreciate your input.

[Terence Morris] “I had been reading in various threads that since different image parameters on the PA246Q are switched off in given modes”

Yes, that’s why I use the Standard Mode for calibration. Everything is switched on and accessible in that mode.

[Terence Morris] “Your Spyder protocol would I guess generate an icc profile in the PC, which overlays any monitor driven parameters.”

Yes, it loads separate ICC profiles for the left and right monitor every time I turn my workstation on.

You’re welcome. That’s the great things about the Creative COW community. You are always bound to find someone who has gone down the road you are about to travel who can tell you what lies ahead.

KVM switches are great for that sort of thing. No problem with using one that I can see as long as both computers can be calibrated without changing the monitor settings (assuming you calibrate your monitors at all).

[Thayalan Paramasawam] “And 1 more question,i use vga output for editing and hdmi for external preview from SVP.”

HDMI is much better than VGA for external preview so you are doing the right thing. I use DisplayPort for both. In fact, one of the reason’s I like these monitors is because my NVIDIA Quadro 4000 has two DisplayPort outputs and these monitors accept DisplayPort input.

Hello, this is the most information I have seen regarding this monitor. I own it and a Spyder 4 and I am confused if I am calibrated. Do you, or anyone, know of a video tutorial on this? I have a big commercial shoot next week and I want to have my BMCC camera, SmallHD AC7, and ASUS PA246Q all matching and calibrated. Anyone have an idea on how to do this? Any help would greatly be appreciated.
