    Hi Cow Community!

I have a bit of an interesting question for you all. Here’s the situation: I’m cutting a show that’s being shot with 4 cameras, all feeding an AJA Ki Pro recording at 1280×720 59.94; cameras are rolling P2 cards at 960×720, 29.97. I need to deliver on HDCam-SR at 720 59.94.
What do you think is the best way I should be working? In 29.97? In 59.94? Either way I’m going to have some conversion work to do, but I wanted to seek some help from the masters of the COW! 🙂 Thanks for reading and hope to hear back some insight!

The KiPro recorded 720p 59.94…you need to deliver 720p 59.94…why not work at 59.94? Why, might I ask, did you shoot to P2 cards at 29.97? If you knew the other footage was 59.94 and you are delivering 59.94? Seems like an odd decision to make. And are you SURE it is 29.97? Because 720p is a 59.94 format by default. You have to choose 30pN in order to actually get 29.97.

As for the 1280×720 vs 960×720…FCP will stretch the 960 to fit the 1280 frame.

    Work in a ProRes 422 1280×720 59.94 sequence.

Thanks for the response, Shane! I actually did do the first three episodes in 59.94. I’m just the post guy who came in after the shoot to piece things together, unfortunately, so I had no say in what went on shooting wise but I’m trying to get them to pick one frame rate or the other! 🙂

I also have to deliver master in 29.97 SD 720×480 (DV); this conversion didn’t seem to be bad (I just rendered out in compressor and show timing seemed to be fine), but I just want to make sure I’m doing everything by the book ya know?

Also, I’m somewhat green with HDCam and HDCam-SR. The deck is set to record 720 59.94 but the TC is counting in 29.97. Is that normal? I’m assuming the 59.94 is speaking of fields and the actual frame rate is 29.97, but I just thought I’d ask! Thanks for the help!

[Dan Melius] ” The deck is set to record 720 59.94 but the TC is counting in 29.97. Is that normal? “

Yes…it is. Odd but the way things are. Don’t ask me why, I’m not an engineer.

[Dan Melius] ” I’m assuming the 59.94 is speaking of fields and the actual frame rate is 29.97″

No, with 720p 59.94 it is actual frames. I guess the number just repeats…but it is normal.
