assigning and managing reel ID’s

FCP should basically give you the option to name the reel before you start capturing in its “Capture Tool”.
If it doesn’t work for you , you can give a new reel name to the different tapes.
Go to the bin after you captured a tape and there roll the columns to the reel – left click then it activates and you can rename it.There will be a warning message that changing the reel name can cause some timing problems but in this case it won’t matter since it will be a brand new capture.If you can’t find the reel column just right click on the top of the columns and pick reel from the rolldown list.
Just make sure that you never name them the same.Avid warns you specifically not to do it but FCP has only a common warning for this.If you did by mistake, close the project and don’t save it then reimport the captured file from your hard drive and give it a proper reel name.

Hey Thomas…

I’m using an HDV to ProRes capture which doesn’t open a Capture Dialogue window…only allows you to assign a clip name which it appends a -1 -2 -3 etc on the end every time there is a scene change.

Issue is, I capture hour long clips and by that time I’ve moved on and sometimes forget to assign a reel name. Looking to do it before I start capture.
